At the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece, the Greek Alliance fought the invading Persian Empire, in 480 BC. A thousand Greek soldiers, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, blocked the road to the entire Persian Army for three days. When the Persians finally took the pass, they had suffered heavy losses.
